Green Anaconda Rescued from River Mouth in South Trinidad

Tagged:

Common name - Green Anaconda Scientific name - Eunectes murinus Local name - Huille, wheel Family - Boidae Type - Reptile Diet - Carnivorous Size - 20ft to 30ft

These magnificent creatures are the largest species of snake in the world. They are native to South America and Trinidad. Though native to Trinidad, often times they can be found on floating islands of lillies, grass and even trees that have been brought out to sea due to flooding in the Amazon River; and often enough, specimens from the South American continent, find there way to our Island of Trinidad.

This species of boa is very much aquatic, which means it is predominantly found in or near to waterways such as rivers, ravines and ponds.

Green Anacondas grow until they die, and females tend to grow significantly larger than the males. Locally, the largest Green Anaconda on record, was around 16feet long, and 9 inches in diameter. However, claims made by hunters and farmers, are that they have seen specimens of the same species, which were much larger.

This juvenile Green Anaconda was found at a river mouth in South Trinidad. A fisherman saw it, and caught it in an attempt to preserve the life of the snake as the other people around him were not as considerate towards the animal. Thankfully he reached out to us Wildlife and Environmental Protection of Trinidad and Tobago - WEPTT and we were able to coordinate with him to retrieve the animal.

This beautiful snake will be relocated and released at an undisclosed location, well away from human interference.
